Freshers Night at SAC

The 2012 batch of IISc UG students organised a party for the students who joined the third batch of the undergraduate program in the Indian Institute of Science. The party started around 18:30 during 15th Thursday this august. Most of the freshers had dressed up in their best clothes and arrived at the Student’s Amenities Center hoping for a wonderful evening after their first week of classes.

The entire evening was planned well in advance by the second year students. The events were organised by the second year students, but a few senior undergrads offered their help. The auditorium was filled to half its maximum strength which was surprisingly low as the total number of undergrads in the institute went up by 100 this year. The turnout was dominated by the freshers followed by their nearest seniors. The number of students from the senior batch was extremely low which was a bit disappointing.

Soft drinks were offered to everyone as they started pouring into the auditorium. Freshers were split into eight groups so as to let them interact and participate as a team in the events which were planned. All the groups were named in a nerdy fashion as it fits the people sitting in the hall. C++, Truthful Liars, Felix Felicis, Visionary were some of the names. The evening started with the ancient game of dog and the bone. It was quite disheartening as most of the volunteers for the game had never played their game in their childhood. Then came dumb charades which was enjoyed by seniors as much as it was by the participants.

Meanwhile a bunch of seniors were discussing about the awards they were planning to give away after the end of events. Then with the help of Vamsi of third year, the participants for the next event were picked. Even a couple of seniors were picked to make the event more enjoyable which was paper dance. The event demanded that the participants pair up and dance on a sheet of paper which will be folded in half after every minute. Nothing was interesting till it came down to three couples. At that point each sheet was just big enough to contain the feet of the couple without giving any movement space. So, to win they had to dance with just their upper bodies or do something fancy. Sarath lifted his partner Ananya and danced which received a raucous applause from the audience. Most even decided that they won. Then it was time for another fold and one more team got eliminated. The floor now belonged to brave Sarath and another not so bright couple which had Naveen from the third year and the fresher Shreya. Now they had to do something fancy as there was not enough space for four feet on the bit of sheet which gave quite some space to dance when the dancing began few minutes before. The brave kid tried to repeat the same move while Shreya stood over Naveen’s feet with some sweet balance. Sarath was not so lucky this time and lost balance with the girl in his hands. Both the game and the girl went out of his hands and Naveen became the star of the day as he received a huge roar from everyone present.

By then dinner had arrived and students were requested to move to the dining area. Food vision, the most popular caterer for IISc events, had a sharp menu with warm and delicious dishes. There was plenty for everyone but was not served in an optimum way which led to long lines and loss of appetite for a few. Hot gulab jamuns with cold vanilla ice cream was loved by everyone as surprisingly the jamuns were actually hot. After dinner, freshers were given a lot of named awards which included funny gifts. The awards were named Rajnikant, SRK and others straight out of Indian cinema and popular culture. Organizers then encouraged everyone to walk the ramp with weird music in the background. The party ended as it struck ten on the clock and people started leaving the hall. Few stayed backed and enjoyed the music played for them to dance, by dancing.
